This one is kinda similair to stage 14 but there are a few key differences. First of all the start of the stage is not as hard. Because of that I think it is more likely we will see a big like 20+ riders breakaway this stage. This stage is also 230.8 kilometers long which is especially for the Vuelta Really long. This could benefit classics riders who are used to the longer racedays.
Because of the length I start with naming Michael Valgren, still no contract for next year, rumours to EF though. More importantly; this stage should suit him. Quite a lot of climbing but Valgren can deal with that look at Worlds for example.
Anthony Roux is also a guy who does ride classics, is in good form and can survive the hills. From the French teams also look at Dorian Godon. He has shown himself on the stage Woods won and this should suit him perfectly. Bit too easy for Peters so I think Godon will be the best bet for AG2R.
Spirits are high at Lotto Soudal, Wellens with another one. I avoid riders who were in the breakaway on stage 14, another effort the day after seems unlikely because 16 is also a chance for them. Better to take a ‘rest day’ in between. Instead I am thinking Stan Dewulf and Tosh van der Sande.
Omar Fraile is one of the main guys for Astana, he has to attack on the last climb solo because he isn’t as punchy as some of the others but I can see him doing that and doing that succesfully.
Will Barta. What A Ride. Really felt bad for him in the timetrial. Vuelta stage win would have defined his career and for Roglic it is just a number. By just 1 second as well, OOF. Today he has another chance however. Hasn’t been in a succesfull breakaway yet but obviously he has the legs. Ide Schelling is another young rider who has impressed this Vuelta, he will try to be in the break again so why not!
Magnus Cort Nielsen, basically the fastest sprinter that I can see survive the hills. One thing is for sure, this stage won’t be raced easy. Including this stage only 4 chances left to make the season a success for some riders. Riders like Philipsen and Bennett will be dropped on one of the climbs.
Alex Aranburu, another quick rider that has a team around him aswell. They tried on stage 14 for a bit, maybe it will work out this time.
