Timetrial time! The parcours is 33,7 kilometers with a quite steep hill at the end. 1,8km 14,2% average. On Sunday the peloton did the Angliru but this is almost a mini-Angliru. Many riders will change bikes, there is a special section where its allowed to change near the bottom of the climb.
Typical Vuelta muro, the steepest parts are close to 30%. Luckily the road surface if good though. More detailed profile by cyclefiesta:
Because of this climb I think Roglic has to be the topfavorite on this one. He might loose a little to Cavagna on the 30k flat part but with his current form that shouldn’t be too much to make up on the climb. And to be fair, I dont see anyone who could realistically win besides those 2.
Sure there is Nelson, Ivo and Rui Oliveira. But his only TT wins have been the Portugese Nationals and that’s not because he is still a talent. Movistar also has Valverde, Soler and Mas who all have a chance at top 10.
Other contenders for top 5 are within team Ineos, Dylan van Baarle former Dutch National TT champ, Chris Froome who has been improving steadily by the looks of it and Amador who could do a decent TT and he is in good form but big chance he might see this as another rest day. Well deserved after giving his teammates a massage though (check his Twitter).
Bagioli hasn’t done any TT yet this season but who knows, maybe he got some inspiration from Evenepoel and Almeida. Within Quick – Step also look at young timetrial talent Garrison.
It looks like Magnus Cort Nielsen also improved his TT at EF. Wout Poels wants to do a good TT for his GC spot. We also have Astana with a few contenders for a top 10, Sanchez and the Izagirres to be exact.
FDJ has Bruno Armirail who should be considered as a candidate for top 5. This TT is a bit flat for him but he has shown good form and he is definetely one to watch.
Felix Grossschartner is in the form of his life right now and is one of the GC contenders who is looking to gain time in this TT. Which automatically throws him into the mix for a stage result as well. He will enjoy the final hill and make up a lot of time there but its probably a bit too flat to go in the mix for top 5, top 10 it is!
Alexander Edmondson and Tim Wellens end this list. Both have been in breakaways this Grand Tour but this TT isnt their main focus. If they go full they might end up with a nice result but they might save energy for the coming stages that suit them better.
